American Boy, Nigerian Girl is the memoir of Robert, a young man from Houston Texas, on a journey to marry Mary-Jane, a woman from a completely different continent with different customs and complex marital traditions. He spent one month living in Nigeria, preparing for their traditional wedding and living as a native would. Robert experienced new foods, new customs and found himself in tense situations as he attempted to adapt to a completely different culture and truly understand the background of his wife-to-be.

Unlike his bride, who speaks three languages, Robert struggled with communication barriers and illness as they traveled treacherous roads and interacted with friends, family and merchants.

This story is based on a journal that Robert wrote in each day during his one month residence in Nigeria. Unlike tourist journeys, the couple shopped in the open air markets and lived in rural neighborhoods and villages. As avid photographers, the couple returned with a wealth of beautiful images, which further enhance the literary journey.
